Most of us don’t give the cleanliness of our carpets much thought, unless there are visible stains that need removing, or if we’re about to vacate the property.
While periodically steam-cleaning your carpets is highly recommended to minimise health hazards like mold and dust mite-related allergies, there are some quick and easy ways to keep your carpets clean and in good condition all year round.
If you’re wondering how to care for your carpets properly, here are five useful tips.
#1 – Keep shoes off inside the house
Whereas many cultures around the world adopt a strict “no shoes inside the house” policy, in Australia it’s more a matter of preference. However, there are several reasons why it’s a good idea to stop wearing outdoor footwear inside the home.
- The bottom of your shoes track dirt, bacteria, pesticides, toxic coal tar, fecal matter and other undesirables into the household, where they are easily embedded into the carpet fibres.
- Socks and bare feet are much gentler on your carpeting than hard soles, which take their toll on carpets and dirty them much faster.
- Give your feet a break! The human body isn’t designed to be wearing footwear all day every day, so let your home be a place of recovery and recuperation for your feet.
To keep shoes off the interior carpet, consider creating a nice space to store shoes at your home’s entrance, and invest in comfortable slippers for the colder months.
#2 – Vacuum your carpet multi-directionally
What do we mean by this? When you vacuum the carpeted flooring of your home, be sure to switch between east-west motions and north-south motions to ensure you maximise the amount of impurities you retrieve from the weaves and fibres.
If you consistently vacuum in the same direction every time, unfortunately you’ll fail to catch some of the contaminants that have found their way into your carpet, and it won’t be as comprehensive a clean as it could be.
#3 – Place carpet offcuts underneath heavy furniture
There’s nothing worse than when you move heavy furniture in your home, only to realise that it’s left a permanent footprint in the carpet that no amount of maintenance will get rid of.
To avoid this, try picking up some offcuts from your local carpeting store (they never have any shortage of these and most businesses will happily give it away for free!). Cut them into small pieces and place them under the legs of heavy couches, tables or cabinets to distribute the weight more evenly and take the pressure off your carpet.
#4 – Use paper towel or white cotton cloth to absorb spills as much as possible
In the unfortunate event that you spill something on your carpet (hey – it happens!), be sure to absorb as much of the liquid as possible, and DON’T WIPE. Another common mistake people make is Googling stain treatments. Why is this a bad idea?
Because carpets come in many different materials and compositions, each of which needs to be cleaned in a different way. A Google search will provide you with “one size fits all” advice, which can end up damaging your carpet and resulting in the need for more extensive (and costlier) maintenance.
If you’re wondering how to care for your carpets, the right stain treatment for your specific carpet ultimately depends on the:
- fibre of the carpet
- build of the carpet
- nature of any stains
- age of those stains
- method in which carpet dyes were applied
- pH tolerance of the carpet

#5 – Regular steam-cleaning from experienced professionals
